Great Blue Heron (R.Ehler 2/22/15)

Low tide will be at 8:20 AM, perfect for a trip starting at 8 AM.  We will have excellent chances to see shorebirds on the rocky jetties lining the creek, and walk as far as we like to check the outer jetty of of the marina’s main channel. We should see most of the common shorebirds, gulls and terns. We will also look for Surfbird, Wandering Tattler, both Turnstones, Dunlin, Black Oystercatcher, Pelagic and Brandt’s Cormorants, Black Skimmer plus whatever scoters, loons, grebes and alcids that may happen to be floating around.

Join us at the del Rey Lagoon parking lot at 8:00 AM. We will scan the ducks in the lagoon , walk to the Ballona/Marina del Rey jetty and – time permitting – cap our morning’s birding with a short walk at the Freshwater marsh across from Playa Vista. Bring binoculars, hat, water and sunscreen. Solid shoes with grippy rubber soles are recommended for the uneven rock stretches of the jetty. It’s called “rip-rap” and it’s a trip trap. bring your spotting scope if you have one. The largest number of birds is found on the Marina channel breakwater. For your navigation system, the meeting place is at 6599 Pacific Ave., Playa del Rey, in the free parking lot between Pacific Ave and the del Rey lagoon.
