Birding the Horn of Africa, with s of Northeast Brazil & the Atlantic Forest, with Catherine McFadden and Paul Clarke. Zoom Evening Meeting, Tuesday, 9 November, 7:30 p.m.

Gemessa Gedel

Topographically, biologically and culturally unique, Ethiopia is home to almost 40 endemic species of birds and a number of mammals found nowhere else on earth, including the rare Ethiopian Wolf and bizarre Gelada Baboon. Local birders Cathy McFadden and Paul Clarke were fortunate to visit this spectacular country in 2016, shortly before ongoing political unrest made travel to many parts of Ethiopia inadvisable. The exotic Prince Ruspoli’s Turaco, unique Stresemann’s Bush-Crow and rare Liben Lark are just three of the 440 species of birds they recorded and photographed as they drove from the Rift Valley to the 13,000 ft high Sanetti Plateau. These species and many more will be featured in this multimedia presentation on the wildlife of Ethiopia.

Catherine S. McFadden is the Vivian & D. Kenneth Baker Professor of Biology at Harvey Mudd College in Claremont. Although she grew up intending to become an ornithologist, she took a detour into marine biology and has instead spent her career studying the evolution and systematics of corals. She and her husband, Paul Clarke, are avid world birders when not trapped at home by pandemics.

***Really excellent presentation. Best we have seen in a long time!

Sadly not a place to bird or visit for the foreseeable future. (…..Burnt-down lodge, etc.!)

Sent from my iPhone: No puppies or trees were harmed by this e-mail……. ….have a marvelous day!
