Anna’s Hummingbird male (J.Kenney 3/13/10)

The color on the male hummingbird gorget is the result of reflected light, not color intrinsic to the feathers. Each tiny gorget feather acts as a prism, and only black can be seen at angles greater than 15 degrees or in poor light.
