Field Trip Report: King Gillette Ranch, 13 March 2010 » _2675 Red-shouldered Hawk

Red-shouldered Hawk soaring (J.Kenney 3/13/10 King Gillette)

Note the lack of dark patagials and the heavily banded tail. The Red-shouldered is smaller than the Red-tailed, prefers riparian habitats, calls with a series of kah notes, and typically flies with a flap-flap-glide behavior rather than simply soar on thermals.
