Pencils with teeth: meet the tiny cookiecutter shark that attacked a catamaran off Cairns
The Guardian | Henry Belot | 7 Sep 2023
These parasitic sharks glow in the dark and are known to have a go at anything they come across, despite their small size. “They’ll find a large animal like a whale or a dolphin, living or dead, and attach themselves to it. They’ll twist and literally pull out a biscuit-sized chunks of flesh. They can do that repeatedly,” McPhee said.

Morning, Love the fact that I’m lucky enough to get these emails. Do you trawl for subject matter, or are you a Brit who subscribes to The Guardian? I’m in foggy, cold Britain (we’ve had an inch of summer here, no more) and when I used to visit LA I would go to the wetlands and Malibu Cove. Must be 20 years ago now. Anyway, thank you, Best Victoria ________________________________

      Hi Victoria:
      Good to hear from you.
SMBAS member Lillian gets things on her “Apple Feed” news feed. Or some such thing. She forwards interesting ones to me & if I think it interesting (which includes nearly anything bird, nature or science related) to our blog readers I post it. The Guardian may simply have a higher proportion of interesting science-y things than other news sources. At least it’s international in scope. If you run across such items, feel free to send them to me (email address can be found here: https://smbasblog.com/officers/ ) Whether I post it or not has a LOT to do with 1) how busy I am at the time with other things, and 2) how easy you make it for me to slap onto the blog with minimal effort on my part.

We may well have met at Malibu at one time or another. I’ve been birding there since the late 1970’s and have bumped into a lot of people there, usually because they come up to me wondering just what the devil I’m doing, staring vaguely off into the distance at nothing in particular.
