From Backyard Birds to Global Change: Citizen science at scale, with Dr. Morgan Tingley.
Zoom Evening Meeting, Tuesday, 10 November, 7:30 p.m.
Birds are changing before our very eyes. With every passing year, species are shifting their ranges, adjusting the timing of migration and breeding, and responding to a rapidly changing world in ways that are often difficult to predict. Yet these changes are unfolding across continents and decades—far beyond what any single scientist could hope to document alone. As a result, ornithologists are turning to the observations of birders through programs like eBird and iNaturalist to understand, in real time, where birds are, how they are faring, and what these changes mean for the future of biodiversity. Join ornithologist and conservation biologist Dr. Morgan Tingley on a journey across scales, from backyards to biomes, to discover how the collective efforts of birders are transforming ornithological research and conservation—and why every checklist has the potential to change what we know about the natural world.

Morgan W. Tingley is Professor of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of California, Los Angeles. He joined the UCLA faculty in 2020, after previously serving as an Assistant Professor at the University of Connecticut. He holds a Ph.D. in Environmental Science, Policy, and Management from UC Berkeley and was a David H. Smith Conservation Research Fellow at Princeton University. He is a past recipient of the “Wings Across the Americas” conservation award from the U.S. Forest Service and is currently the President of the American Ornithological Society. Here in California, he serves as a Research Associate and long-term collaborator with the Institute for Bird Populations and is the Chair of the Science Advisory Board of the first ever California Bird Atlas.
