To move or not to move?

March 27, 2014

We have received a member complaint about not finding parking at the Chris Reed Park evening meeting place. This leads us to believe there may be others with opinions about where we should meet in the future. Your Board will be discussing the possibilities at the annual summer planning meeting. (The Chris Reed Park room is already rented for May.) So please inform us as to your favored venue.

We had parking problems, narrow spaces, noise from other rooms,… at the Ken Edwards Center. At Reed Park we have only street parking and it gets harder to find after 7:15. All non-City subsidized sites we have investigated would cost between $10 and $20 per attendee and no member has offered to subsidize a better meeting place.
We look forward to your feedback. If you want to keep it private, please email me directly at

Stay where we are. Much nicer space and parking is not any harder than old place which was impossible!

I think you will have complaints wherever you go. I had no problems at either venue (except some noise sometimes). If it is harder to find spaces after 7:15 why not just change the meeting time to 7pm? An additional comment—-the only time there is really a problem at Chris Reed is when the church/school has a meeting or open house which I think only happened once (to be at the same time of our meeting).

Thanks to all of you for what you do to make this group a success.

The only thought I have regarding this problem is that perhaps we could change the meeting time, or suggest that attendees come by 7:00 PM, to catch available parking. There is always considerable chatter before meetings and those with significant info could have an opportunity to catch up and share.
I would not mind return to Ken Edwards, if the parking structure across the street from the restaurant has become available again. Food was more acceptable. We still got some exercise, to and from the meeting location. The other inconveniences seemed minor. (Just a thought). I have been okay with Chris Reed Park. But the one time I could not find parking was a real hassle!

Thanks to Lu for soliciting comments on our meeting venue. We both favor a return to Ken Edwards Center for future meetings for easier parking and more pleasant meeting rooms.

About parking, we came to Reed Park a few weeks ago for the March meeting, were unable to find a parking space and so went home. We arrived around 7:25 pm and drove around the block twice, but could not find a place to park. It was particularly frustrating because I was still on crutches and so unable to walk any distance. Of course, the one handicap parking space was already taken.

Parking is a problem every time we go to Reed Park for SMBAS meetings, but was rarely a problem for us at the Ken Edwards Center. I understand some SMBAS members had difficulty finding parking at Ken Edwards Center. Perhaps if the SMBAS meeting started earlier there would be more spaces. Glyn holds his monthly guide dog there at 6:15 PM and rarely hears of parking problems there.

We both also both prefer the Ken Edwards Center’s meeting rooms, which are carpeted, have nicer chairs, better restrooms, and more attention to aesthetics. Also, in spite of the occasional noise from adjacent meetings, the acoustics seem to be better than in the echo-ey auditorium at Reed Park.

So, for next year, we both would favor a return to the Ken Edwards Center for our monthly meetings. Thanks again for posting this on the blog, Lu!

    Warmly, Marilyn and Glyn Judson

does SM Promenade or the other shopping center have a community room, perhaps? Westside Pavilion has such a meeting room.

RE Chris Reed Park: You have a good turn-out for the meetings and the room is comfortable.  It seems people are dealing with the parking problem.  Getting there early is something of a solution.  Would it help to change the meeting time to 7?  Is parking any more available earlier?  Or is that just too early for most people to get to the meeting?

I come from west LA, so I need to get started yesterday no matter what time.
